Please join us as we take the Metrorail to the Fisher Museum on the USC campus to view an exhibit of Kara Walker’s work.
We’ll meet on the fourth level of the Sierra Madre Villa Metro Station in East Pasadena at 1:00PM, in front of the turnstiles, and catch the A-Line to Los Angeles. There’s an easy transfer to the E-Line at the Grand Ave Arts/Bunker Hill Station. We exit at the Expo Park/USC Station and walk across the street to the museum. If the museum sidewalk gates are open, it’s a 3-minute walk; if the gates are closed, we walk about two short blocks.
Admission to the Museum is free. Don’t forget to bring your Metro Tap Card! The train ride takes about an hour from Pasadena to USC.
Important: group visits to the Museum require advance registration and are capped at 25 people. Please register for this event by November 6 so that we can plan accordingly.
From the Fisher Museum’s website:
“The career-spanning exhibition presents Walker’s powerful and provocative images that employ contradictions to critique the painful legacies of slavery, sexism, violence, imperialism, and other power structures, including those in the history and hierarchies of art and contemporary culture.”
“A leading artist of her generation, Kara Walker (b. 1969) works in a range of mediums, including prints, drawings, paintings, sculpture, film, and the large-scale silhouette cutouts for which she is perhaps most recognized. Walker’s process involves extensive research in history, literature, art history, and popular culture. Intentionally unsentimental and ambiguous, the works explore the irreconcilable inconsistencies that mirror the human condition.”
