1619 Current Events - June 2025

The group did not have a formal agenda or presentation. The meeting focused on current events in general and concerns attendees had either locally or in cities and states where they reside.

The attendee in San Francisco reported no issues with ICE or protests. 

The attendee from Portland, Oregon indicated there were protests, but, no intervention by law enforcement was necessary. Portland has a long history of protest in orderly formats.

There were some concerns related to the visit by the Vice President but the visit was to be short and related to political fund raising.

The attendees next discussed the difficulty identifying reliable news sources while stressing the importance of having good sources of information. Several attendees discussed sources they either did not trust or felt were consistently reliable.

There was a brief discussion about global alignment and changes such as BRICS. The attendees felt it was important to monitor these changes.

Concerns were expressed about the effects of budget cuts to Medicaid and the impacts on rural and small underserved communities.

Finally, the attendees discussed the values of community and belonging: the need to protect and participate in community organizations, to protect the vulnerable, to value and protect local sources of History and local new sources.

The next meeting with be held on July 18th at 12pm PST and our guest will be Kieran Haile. Haile is a Californian who learned about his family connection to the 1898 Wilmington massacre and coup. Since learning about his family connection to this event, he has been traveling to North Carolina to work with the local people who are preserving the history and working on restitution and reparation issues.  He will share information about how this event has impacted him and his family personally after learning of his family connection through Ancestry.
