1619 " Rump" Session

The 1619 Project Discussion Group met on September 1 at 10:00 AM PST.
 
The session had officially been canceled due to the proximity to  holiday weekend, but a few participants showed up anyway, so we conducted a "Rump" session. 
 
 
The attendees engaged in a discussion about two recent articles focusing on the 14th amendment and the presidency.  The articles were written by retired Federal Judge J. Michael Luttig and Emeritis Professor of Constitutional Law, Laurence Tribe. They appeared on MSNBC and the video of the 14th Amendment  Interview is available for viewing.   The second article was written by two arrorneys who are members of the Federalist Society, William Baude of the University of Chicago and Michael Paulsen of the University of St. Thomas.  Their article will be published in the Law Review of the University of Pennsylvania.  The New York Times published a preview in the August 11, 2023 edition.
 
The discussion focused on three elements of the 14th amendment: violation of the oath of office requiring the support and protection of the constitution, the requirement that no person who engaged, participated in or gave aid or comfort in sedition or a conspiracy could stand for office and whether the events of January 6, 2020 met the legal definition of an insurrection.
 
As a matter of interest, you might want to look at a new article posted in  our Racism Now blog covering the racist history of Pasadena and this area that we live in through the eyes of the people who lived there. 
 
 
 The next meeting will be September 15, 2023 at 12:00 PM PST. Current news is alive with breaking news events which will provide ample material to fuel our discussion on the 15th. A good starting point our 3rd Friday discussion might be a description of what casual racism is like. One of our villagers has contributed a short piece describing some of her personal experience with racism. I reccomend this short srticle to you. We apprecite your registering on our website for the event  so that we can know how many people are interested in this discussion. We welcome guests to this discussion so feel free to invite friends who might be interesed.
