AgingSGV.org: A New Resource for Aging in the San Gabriel Valley
By Jim HendrickPosted: 12/19/2024
Aging is a unique journey, and Pasadena Village is here to support you every step of the way. We’re thrilled to introduce AgingSGV.org, a new online hub designed to connect older adults in the San Gabriel Valley with the tools, resources, and information they need to thrive. Nutritionist and Villager Lorrie Gray said, “I became familiar with the AgingSGV website shortly after it was launched this past summer.” Whether you’re exploring new opportunities or facing the challenges of aging, this dynamic platform offers guidance for every stage of life.
A Hub of Resources for Every Need
AgingSGV.org provides easy access to services tailored to older adults. Villager Valerie Jones said “I was very impressed with the website and its variety and multitude of topics and references.” From mobility aids to resources for the visually or hearing impaired, organizations like the Braille Institute and Convalescent Aid Society are featured to help maintain independence. Emergency preparedness is also key, with links to programs like the Red Cross and Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) to ensure readiness for earthquakes and other crises. “I was surprised that the website already had more than twenty categories of resources and within each category there was a useful mix of articles written by Village members, YouTube presentations, and links to reputable websites that expanded on the topic,” said Villager Lorrie Gray.
For caregivers, the site offers support and advice through resources like the Huntington Senior Care Network and USC’s Family Caregiver Resource Center. These programs offer professional assistance and guidance for those caring for loved ones.
The site was initially funded by a grant from the Pasadena Community Foundation and expanded upon this year with additional funding from the community foundation and the Rotary Club of South Pasadena. This community support allowed the resources to be available in Spanish as well as English.
Combating Isolation and Staying Engaged
Loneliness can impact health, but AgingSGV.org promotes community and connection. It highlights ways to engage socially through Pasadena Village programs, volunteering, and local events. The need for social engagement is strong in older adults. Pasadena Village offers a full calendar of opportunities for social interaction.
Living Well and Staying Active
Good health is central to successful aging. AgingSGV.org emphasizes physical activity and recreation, connecting users with fitness classes. Lifelong learning also plays a role, with resources like the Pasadena Area Liberal Arts Center (PALAC) offering educational opportunities. The need for social engagement is strong in older adults. Pasadena Village offers a full calendar of opportunities for social interaction. Ed Mervine, leader of the Pasadena Village Wellness Practice group offers sage advice, “When what I tell myself about aging is mostly negative, I’m condemning myself to sickness and a shorter life. My job is to rearrange those beliefs to make space for the life I want.”
Planning for the Future
Whether you wish to age in place or explore senior living options, AgingSGV.org provides valuable information. From housing grants to safety programs like the Pasadena MASH Program, it ensures your living environment supports your needs.
Get Involved and Build Community
AgingSGV.org is more than a website . . . it’s a community effort. By volunteering, donating, or sharing this resource, you can help shape a supportive future for older adults in the San Gabriel Valley.
Lorrie Gray concluded, “I would encourage all Villagers to peruse and get familiar with the Aging SGV website to see the categories of information available as they may need some of these resources in the future, if not now.”
