One Village, One Book
By Catherine FullerPosted: 08/28/2023
September is going to be One Village, One Book month! The plan is that those interested in participating will read Breaking the Age Code: How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long and Well You Live by Becca Levy, PhD. Our Wise Aging group discovered this book and found it to be the most interesting book we’ve read so far.
Dr. Levy’s main point is that we can enhance our physical, mental, and emotional well-being by paying attention to our “age beliefs.” This is a subtle concept. It is not about stereotypes or “positive thinking.” It’s about the implicit ideas we have about aging, that we may not even be aware of. What is so intriguing about her work is that it is based on solid research, not just wishful thinking about how it ought to be as we age. She has studied many different populations over the past 40 years and has found that her conclusions apply to a vast spectrum. Read the book and find out why blind people have more positive age beliefs than the general population! The book even has a quiz we can take to determine what our age beliefs are.
So, the Wise Aging group proposes that we read this book as One Village. It’s available on Amazon in hardcover, paperback, Kindle, or audiobook, and at Vroman’s. If you say you are a Pasadena Village book club member at Vroman’s, they will give you a 20% discount.
All villagers are invited to join a discussion of the book (with refreshments) at the Village Office, 236 W. Mountain St., #104, Pasadena from 5 pm to 6:30 pm, September 20.
