Creating Safe and Smart Spaces with Home Technology

Smart home technology offers innovative solutions to enhance security, convenience, and independence. From voice assistants to activity sensors, Jim Hendrick talks to Pasadena Villagers about the smart technology they use.

As technology continues to evolve, smart home devices are becoming valuable tools for enhancing safety, comfort, and independence—especially for older adults. From voice-activated assistants to automated medication reminders, these innovations are helping Pasadena Villagers create safer and more convenient living spaces.

The Rise of Smart Homes

A smart home is equipped with internet-connected devices that automate daily tasks, monitor safety, and improve accessibility. While some people may hesitate to embrace new technology, many Pasadena Villagers are already using smart devices in their daily lives—whether it’s controlling lights with a smartphone, using a smart thermostat, or relying on a robotic vacuum. Beverly Lafontaine has found her smartwatch particularly useful: “Using my smartwatch has been very beneficial in predicting when my walk is unsteady and I’m in danger of falling. It encourages healthy habits by tracking my heart rate, my daily steps, as well as my daily exercise routines.”

For those aging in place or supporting loved ones, integrating smart home technology can provide peace of mind. As Judy Packard noted, “My smartphone has the ability for anyone to see my health information if I’m in an accident or unconscious.” These tools not only increase convenience but can also be lifesaving in emergencies.

Essential Smart Home Devices for Safety

Many smart devices are designed to help older adults maintain independence while ensuring their well-being. Here are a few key technologies that can enhance safety at home:

Voice Assistants – Devices like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant can set reminders, answer questions, and control other smart devices. For those with limited mobility, voice assistants offer a hands-free way to manage daily tasks.

Smart Doorbells and Locks – Video doorbells, such as Ring, allow users to see and speak with visitors without opening the door. Valerie Jones finds her smart door camera invaluable, “I do have a Ring, which affords me the ability to see my front porch if someone comes by my front door.” Smart locks also enable homeowners to grant access remotely to trusted caregivers or family members.

Activity Sensors – These devices track movement within the home, notifying caregivers of unusual inactivity that may indicate a fall or emergency.

Automated Medication Systems – Smart pill dispensers help ensure medications are taken on time and in the correct dosage, reducing the risk of missed doses or errors.

Smart Thermostats – These devices learn a user’s schedule and adjust temperatures accordingly, improving energy efficiency while keeping the home comfortable.

Robotic Vacuums and Smart Appliances – Automated vacuum cleaners and kitchen appliances with smart features can help reduce physical strain and make household tasks easier.

Overcoming Tech Hesitation

Not everyone has embraced smart home technology. Some Pasadena Villagers, like Claire Gorfinkle and Patrick Mathews, prefer to live without it. However, as one participant in a recent Urban Walk noted, “Not many tech Luddites exist today. The cell phone is like a body part now.”

For those new to smart technology, the best approach is to start small. Begin with a device that meets an immediate need—such as a video doorbell for security or a smart thermostat for comfort. Many companies offer free consultations to help older adults identify the best solutions for their homes.

The Future of Safe and Smart Living

Smart home technology is no longer a luxury, it’s an accessible and practical tool for enhancing quality of life. Whether it’s ensuring safety, improving daily routines, or providing peace of mind to caregivers, these devices empower older adults to maintain independence while staying connected to their support networks.

By embracing smart technology, Pasadena Villagers are creating safer and smarter spaces, allowing them to age with confidence in the comfort of their own homes.
